What it means
zcube keeps the record of its last failure and the bundles it writes in a state directory: $XDG_STATE_HOME/zcube, or $HOME/.local/state/zcube. Neither variable names an absolute path, or the directory can't be created or written. Bundles are only ever written there, never sent anywhere.
Name a directory you can write, for example export XDG_STATE_HOME=$HOME/.local/state
zcube local keeps its database, logs and containers in a directory of its own, $ZCUBE_LOCAL_DIR if that is set, else the local directory under the state directory above. The same applies: it must be absolute, and zcube must be able to create and write it. If ZCUBE_LOCAL_DIR is set, change or unset that one instead; XDG_STATE_HOME does not affect it.
